Overview

Codingal, the #1 coding platform for kids and teens in partnership with Gen X Institute based out of Johannesburg, presents the "Code Champions" Hackathon.

 

An online hackathon competition for students in grades 1-12 to collaborate and innovate with the best minds.

 

You can participate individually.

 

The competition is for South Africa & Swaziland Students only.

Prizes

Three winners will be selected in each category to receive a 'Winner Certificate' from Codingal & Gen X Institute

 

Additionally, every student who submits a completed hackathon project will receive a coveted 'Certificate of Participation'.

Themes & Projects

Grade 1-4: Wildlife Wonders

Description: Create an interactive game or animation showing animals in their habitats. Design characters, animate movements, and share fun facts.


Choose your platform: Any Block based platform like Scratch, Thunkable, code,org etc


 

Grade 5-8: Deep Sea Discovery 

Description: Develop an interactive app or animation exploring ocean life, shipwrecks, and underwater volcanoes. Include marine biology education.


Choose your platform: Any Block based platform like Scratch, Thunkable, code,org etc

 

Grade 9-12: Inventions

 

Description: Human history is full of inventions. What’s your favourite invention? Is it the aeroplane, self-driving car or anything else? Get creative and build an app or a website that has useful information about one of your favourite inventions ever.

 

Choose your platform: Any Block based platform like Scratch, Thunkable, code,org or text based language

Guidelines

How do I register for the hackathon? 

  1. Click the "Register & Start" button on this page.

  2. Input your mobile number.

  3. Enter all the necessary information in the registration form.

  4. Click on the "Register for competition" button and you register for the competition.

 

How to submit your project?

After the completion of your project, visit this page to submit your project.

Click on the “Register & Start” button. Then, input your mobile number and enter the OTP received via SMS.

Later, click on the "Submit Project" button and fill in the below information:

Project Description* (Tell us something about your project)

Project Link (Share the link of your project)

Source Code (If the project is not made on an online platform)

Upload Project File (You may upload any video, presentation, or screenshots that you would like us to see in zip file and not more than 50 MB; not mandatory)

 

Final step

Click "Submit". You have submitted your project.

How to choose Right Platform?

  

Choosing the best platform for hackathon competition depends on your project goals, your coding experience, and what features you need to make your project awesome.

Know more about each platform:

Scratch

  • Ideal for beginners, especially children and those new to programming.

  • Visual block-based programming language.

  • Good for creating interactive stories, animations, and simple games without needing to write code.

Code.org

  • Similar to Scratch but with a broader curriculum aimed at teaching programming concepts.

  • Offers courses suitable for K-12 education.

  • Can be used to create simple games and interactive projects.

Thunkable

  • Mobile app development platform that uses a visual drag-and-drop interface.

  • Good for creating Android and iOS apps without extensive coding knowledge.

  •  Suitable for prototyping or developing apps that require basic functionalities.

Python

  • General-purpose programming language known for its simplicity and readability.

  •  Widely used for web development, scientific computing, data analysis, and automation tasks.

  •  Good choice for projects requiring scripting, data manipulation, or server-side applications.

HTML/CSS:

  • HTML is the standard markup language for creating web pages.

  • CSS is used for styling HTML elements and defining their appearance.

  •  Essential for web development; used to create static web pages, responsive designs, and basic interactivity.

C++:

  • General-purpose programming language often used for system/application software, game development, and embedded systems.

  •  Provides low-level control over system resources.

  •  Suitable for performance-critical applications or projects that require hardware interaction.

Java

  • Object-oriented programming language known for its platform independence (via the JVM).

  • Widely used for Android app development, enterprise-level applications, and web services.

  • Suitable for large-scale projects, server-side applications, and Android apps.

FAQs

Why do I need to register using a mobile number?


You are required to register via a mobile number, as it is the primary source of identification for registration and project submission.

 

Is this competition online?


Yes, this competition is 100% online. The participant can work on their project at any place and time as long as they have access to a computer/laptop and an internet connection.

How much does it cost to enter into this competition?


There is no registration fee to participate in the competition.

 

What if I forget my registered mobile number while submitting the project?


In case, you forget your registered mobile number, you will have to re-register for the competition before submitting the project.

 

Will all the team members submit the project?


No. In case of team participation, one member of the team will have to submit the project only.

 

What if I entered the wrong information in one of the form fields while submitting my project?


If you have entered any wrong information in one of the form fields, kindly resubmit the project. Your latest submission will be considered for evaluation.

 

Will an older project be considered for evaluation?


No, any old or previous project will not be considered for evaluation.

 

What will be provided to competition winners?

 

An E-Certificate (not hard copy) will be provided to all the winners and those who have submiited valid hackathon project.

 

Can I submit more than one project?


No. You can submit only one project per competition.

Participants will receive:

  • Certificate of Participation and Winner Certificates
